“It’s about expressing ourselves musically in the freest form that shows a high level of composition, something the forefathers — Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Quincy Jones, Isaac Hayes — established,” says Muhammad, who was part of legendary rap act A Tribe Called Quest. “But we’re coming from a hip-hop place, from the golden era (of hip-hop). We’re continuing that and adding orchestration to it. I don’t think we can call it one particular genre. We’re establishing something new.”
